On a freezing cold night a solitary Lightning stands vigil against intruders to sovereign airspace. English Electric Lightning was for many of the cold war years one of Great Britain's front line air defence fighters. Around the country aircraft such as this one would be on Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) ready to intercept any hostile or unidentified aircraft entering UK airspace.
